Panthers girls' rally falls short
Jenna Mauler
Great Bend Panther Jenna Mauler (11) is trapped by Hutchinson High defenders Tina Robertson (50), Gabbie Posch (23) and Makenzie Hefley (54).

A 3-point barrage rallied Great Bend’s girls within one point against Hutchinson High as Jenna Mauler hit a pair and Jaclynn Schroeder and Sydney Unruh each hit a trey.
But the poised Salthawks fought off Great Bend’s rally 47-35 by closing the game with a 19-6 scoring run by shutting down the Panthers’ perimeter game.
Hutchinson led 27-16 when the Panthers suddenly hit fire from outside as Mauler, Schroeder, Unruh and Mauler off Taryn Warren’s assist scrapped within 29-28. Hutchinson's Harlie Wilson scored three points off back-to-back steals and Tina Robertson added two free throws for a 35-28 lead.
“Every time we made a run at them, our girls dug in defensively,” said Great Bend coach Carrie Minton. “But then we’d make a silly turnover or foul. It put us back at the starting block where we had to dig out again.”
Hutchinson's Gabbie Posch scored 11 points, six in the fourth quarter. She scored on a perfect backdoor cut and driving shot to go with two free throws. Robertson and McKenzie Hefley each added 10 points.
The Salthawks (3-1) exploited their superior height and strength inside to control the offensive boards, leading to extra shots.

Great Bend (2-4) was paced by Jenna Mauler with nine points. Taryn Warren scored six points. But 16 turnovers and Hutchinson’s 13 offensive rebounds were too much to overcome.
“We had too many turnovers, but part of that you give credit to Hutchinson for playing physical,” Minton said. “We made some turnovers and it put our girls on their heels and they played timid. That’s exactly what a team like that wants.”
The Salthawks led 22-16 at halftime by scoring six points on layups off turnovers to go with six second-chance points. Hutchinson gained six extra possessions with offensive rebounds. The Salthawks forced 15 first-half turnovers,
Hutchinson pulled to a 10-6 after one quarter with Hefley’s rebound basket and Ziya Simms layup on a steal. The Salthawks led 18-6 after Wilson’s steal and layup and Hefley’s inside score.
The Panthers rallied within 18-14 on five free throws and Taryn Warren’s steal and layup. Posch and Wilson scored for a 22-16 halftime lead.

Hutchinson had a chance to sweep four games to start the season, but the Salthawks lost to Buhler 40-37 after leading 37-34 with a minute left.
