PARK CITY – Great Bend's Daizy Gomez (125) survived a wild 5-6A quarterfinal victory against Washburn Rural's No. 2 ranked Addi Broxterman (1:52). Broxterman gained revenge with a third-place state wrestling pin over Gomez (4:24).
Gomez had beaten Garden City's No. 5 ranked semifinalist Maya Tarbet three times. But Tarbet spoiled Gomez's championship appearance with a pin in 5:30.
The 125-pound division was super competitive as the top three ranked wrestlers lost. Salina Central's No. 4 Lydia Dong upset Dodge City's No. 1 Ariana DeLaRosa.
Kaylea McMullen (28-14, 120) was eliminated 7-1 by Newton's Emily Torres. Katie Kuhlman (18-14, 135) was eliminated with a pin (1:47) by Washburn Rural's Alexis Fredickson.
Natalee Daniels (24-13, 190) didn't medal, but wrestled her best against No. 3 Salina Central's Alison Coykendall in a 10-8 loss and against Derby's No. 4 Trinity Williams in a 3-1 overtime setback.
HOISINGTON — No. 6 Kiana Grandclair (38-5, 120) edged Stockton's Ashlyn Hahn 2-1 for third place. Grandclair lost (3:37) to Columbus' finalist No. 2 Addison Saporito (3:37).
Cardinals Daijah Jones (40-6, 130), Tally Wikum (30-8, 140) and No. 4 Lyrica Orosco (28-9, 145) all placed fifth. Jones pinned Wellington's Lainey Farley for fifth place. Wikum beat Circle's No. 2 Kate Schmidt on a forfeit. Orosco pinned Cherryvale's Taylor Plumley (2:41).
Hoisington’s Tally Wikum, last year’s 138 runner-up, fell 2-1 in the quarterfinals to Baldwin’s Audrey Darnell, who is ranked No. 1.
Last year's fourth-place medalist Jones lost to Pratt's No. 1 Jadyn Thompson 4-1 and lost 10-8 after leading 5-2 to Rock Creek’s Brooklyn Burenheide in the 130 quarterfinals. Orosco lost 4-1 to Mulvane's No. 1 Kammie Schanz.
LARNED —Larned's Reese Watkins (22-17, 120) lost to Chanute's Kadynce Axelson (1:52) for fifth place.
