HAYS — Every shot matters in a golf regional.
The Great Bend Panthers celebrated a trip to the 5A state golf tournament keyed by fourth-place medalist Cole Streck (80). The Panthers shot 355 to edge Newton by one stroke in Monday's 5A golf regional at Hays' Smoky Hill Country Club.
The Panthers also counted scores by 11th-place Cal Dunekack (88), 22nd-place Brantley Baldwin (92) and 27th-place Jayson Effertz (95). Dunekack bettered his season average by four shots.
The Panthers last qualified for 5A state golf in 2003.
"That's a long dry spell; one we're happy to end," McAtee said. "We’re very proud of this group qualifying. With four sophomores and two freshmen, playing in the state tournament will provide a great experience for coming years."
Medalist Tradgon McCrae (75) and runner-up Josh Norris (78) led Hays High (324) to first place, six strokes ahead of Maize South (330). The 5A state tournament is scheduled May 20 at Dodge City's Mariah Hills Golf Course.
