Panthers sweep TMP Monarchs
HAYS – After pitcher Hunter Herrman shut down Hays Thomas More Prep 9-0, the Panther bats rallied for an 11-5 victory to sweep the Monarchs in Tuesday’s baseball doubleheader. The Panthers (13-5, 2-2 WAC) journey to Dodge City (6-10, 2-2 WAC) Friday. The Panthers own the fourth-best record in the 5A West, which would guarantee a postseason home site.
PANTHERS 9, TMP 0 (G1) – Herrman (4-2, 3.64 ERA) worked 41/3 innings with four strikeouts. Reliever Slade Mohr (1.91 ERA) threw 22/3 scoreless innings. He retired the final two batters to preserve the Panthers’ fouth shutout.
Carson Umphres doubled home Daxton Minton and Koehn Ribordy in the third inning.
Trenton Kern and Owen Kaiser delivered 2-run singles in a 5-run fifth inning. Minton’s single drove home Kaiser for a 7-0 lead. Premer’s triple was followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Kern and Kaiser for a 9-0 lead.
PANTHERS 11, TMP 5 (G2) – After trailing 3-0 thanks to a combined seven walks and hit batters, an error and wild pitch, the Panthers rallied with 11 runs.
Premer’s RBI single, an RBI double by Herrman and Kern scoring on an error when Kaiser’s single was misplayed forced a 3-3 tie.
Kern and Premer ripped 2-run singles to highlight an 8-run sixth inning. The Monarchs collapsed three errors, two hit batters and a walk in an 8-run, 4-hit inning.
Minton (2-0, 0.48 ERA) pitched 32/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Minton has yielded one earned runs in 142/3 innings.
After 18 games, Premer is batting .454 (25 for 55); Umphres .412 (21 for 51); J.J. Grove .400 (20 for 54); Kern .390 (16 for 41) and Koehn Ribordy .358 (19 for 53).
