ANDOVER — Great Bend's wrestling team qualified 10 of 14 wrestlers for the 5A state tournament Friday.

No. 4 ranked Triston Tomlinson (30-11, 106), No. 5 Kaiden Hoffman (24-15, 126); Hayden Kelly (18-21, 132); No. 6 Skyler McMullen (32-11, 138), No. 5 Jace Schartz (38-8, 144), No. 3 Cooper Liles (34-8, 150), Matthew Johnson (32-11, 175), Trenton Kern (27-20, 190), Keyven Schroeder (37-11, 215) and Brody Schnoebelen (25-19, 285) qualified for the 5A state wrestling championship.

Panthers Tomlinson and Schartz placed third. Tomlinson defeated Hays High's No. 5-ranked Grady Lind 5-4. Schartz defeated Andover's No. 3 ranked Bradley Trimmell, who forfeited.

McMullen and Johnson earned fourth-place medals. Wichita Carroll's No. 4 Brady Duling defeated McMullen, 8-2. Andover's No. 6 Tate Hutchinson defeated Johnson 9-2 for third plsace.

When Great Bend competes at the 5A wrestling regional Friday, coach Nathan Broeckelman realizes the challenge where the regional will eliminate numerous top 10 wrestlers. The top eight regional finishers reach the state tournament at Park City.

The Andover western regional features 10 of the 14 top-ranked wrestlers and 64 of the 84 state-ranked wrestlers. In the lowest 10 weights, the Andover regional has 52 of 60 ranked wrestlers, 87%.

Great Bend’s No. 3 ranked Cooper Liles (31-6, 150) placed fifth last year and Matthew Johnson (29-9) finished sixth last year.

Other returning state qualifiers are No. 6 Skyler McMullen (29-10, 138), No. 5 ranked Jace Schartz (34-7, 144); Keyven Schroeder (33-9, 215) and Brody Schnoebelen (22-17, 285).

“We’d love to get nine or 10 guys qualified. It’s hard in the super regional,” Broeckelman said. “Eight of the top 10 teams will compete. The West dominates when it comes to medals. The 5A regional will be brutal unless the KSHSAA changes how they place teams.”

LARNED 3-1A REGIONAL — Area teams will compete at Saturday’s Larned regional. The top four qualifiers advance to the state tournament at Hays.

Hoisington's CKL league champions No 3 ranked Josiah Ball (24-3, 132), Teron Kraft (19-6, 152) and Cole Gilliland (26-3, 285) join CKL runner-up No. 4 ranked Eastin Redetzke (15-4, 126) and Deryk Yott (34-10, 150) are returning state qualifiers.

Larned's CKL champion No. 3 ranked Luke Fischer (24-3, 190) and CKL runner-up No. 3 ranked Carter Atteberry (26-7, 215) are returning state qualifiers.
