HOISINGTON – The Phillipsburg Panther girls showed their strength and balance with a solid 60-35 non-league basketball victory over Hoisington Monday. The powerhouse Panthers (16-2) ended the nation’s third-longest winning streak at 138 games when they beat Central Plains earlier this season.
Point guard Taryn Sides scored 15 points and Kay Pakkebier added 13 points as the Panthers mixed height, length and athleticism on offense and defense. The Panthers’ height and length scored points off 21 Hoisington turnovers. Their superior height allowed the Panthers to corral offensive rebounds and shoot over the Cardinals’ defense.
The pesky Cardinals (7-12) played with heart and intensity, but lacked the firepower to match the Panthers. The Cardinals never backed down or lacked hustle. Jaci Guthrie scored nine points and Keeley Wolf (7), Macy Hanzlick (7) and Addy Mason (6) contributed.
“Phillipsburg has a tone of weapons, a lot of players who can score,” said Hoisington coach Mandy Mason. “We didn’t grab enough defensive rebounds and we put them at the line. We played well early in the ballgame.”
