WAKEENEY — Hoisington, Claflin and Ellinwood boys’ tennis teams competed in the high school Class 3-1A regional on Friday..
Claflin’s No. 1 single Benn Kirmer, who concluded the regular season with a 18-8 record that gave him the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye, qualified for state by taking first place at the regional.
The Wildcats’ No. 1 singles player topped Ellinwood’s No. 1 single Kale Clawson, who finished in second place, 6-3 and 6-0. Clawson will also be heading to the state meet in Hillsboro on Friday and Saturday.
Ethan Smith, Hoisington’s No. 1 singles player, took third place by defeating Trego’s Jacob Weber 6-0 and 6-3.
Hoisington’s No. 1 doubles, Chris Batt and Chase Buntain, also qualified for state with a third-place finish over Scott City’s Corbin Yeager and Luke Minnix. The Cardinals’ duo lost the first game 6-1, but came back to take the next two games 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3).

Larned trio qualifies for state at Cimarron regional
CIMARRON — The Larned High School boys’ tennis team will be sending its No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, as well as its No. 1 doubles, to the Class 3-1A state meet in Hillsboro starting on Friday and finishing up on Saturday.
The Indians’ top finisher at Friday’s regional in Cimarron was No. 1 singles players Jaret Johnson, who was given a first-round bye and went 2-1 on the day to take second place.
Kevin Vonfeldt finished in fourth place as the No. 2 singles player for Larned.
The Indians’ No. 1 doubles team, Jahman Hill and Roelof Pier, finished in fourth place after going 2-2 on Friday.
As a team, Larned took second place at the regional with 22 points, putting them behind Sterling, which snagged 22.
