Baseball Cardinals sweep Vikings

HOISINGTON — Hoisington’s Jeremy Breit delivered a run-scoring triple that scored Hunter Hanzlick for back-to-back triples that sparked the Cardinals past Smoky Valley 6-5 for a Central Kansas League doubleheader sweep Tuesday. The Cardinals won the opener 7-3.
Red-hot Hoisington (6-2) travels to first-place Nickerson (7-1) Thursday for its third doubleheader in four days. Smoky Valley (3-8, 2-8 CKL) heads to Pratt Friday.
CARDINALS 7, VIKINGS 3 — Hoisington’s four-run fourth inning was triggered when Alex Schremmer, Kyle Lang, Hanzlick and Jeremy Breit singled. Collin Schlochtermeier reached on an error and the Vikings committed three errors.
Breit’s double scored Schremmer in the fifth inning. Schmmer’s single scored Myles Menges in the sixth inning.
The Vikings’ Chris Mullen’s double scored Ben Weldy in the fourth inning. Austin Lustfield and Zach Able scored in the seventh that was helped by two errors.
CARDINALS 6, VIKINGS 5 — Reliever Menges retired Jordin Foth and Lustfield with the go-ahead runners on base to preserve 6-5 victory. Hanzlick drilled a two-run homer and scored the game-winning run to spark the Cardinals.
Schremmer and Lang scored first-inning runs and Schlochtermier delivered a run-scoring single for a 2-1 lead. Boxberger’s RBI single scored Schlochtermeier in the third inning. Hanzlick’s two-run homer scored Lang for a 5-4 lead after four innings.
Zach Able scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
CARDINALS 7, LYONS 6 (8 innings) — Menges’ double delivered the walkoff victory that scored Schlochtermeier for an eight-inning victory Monday that was suspended in the eight inning last week. The Cardinals rallied from a 5-1 deficit. Schlochtermeir’s single scored Lang in the first inning.
With two out, Schremmer walked and Lang reached on an error. Hanzlick’s double scored two runs and Breit’s RBI double was followed by Braxton Donovan’s RBI for a 6-5 lead. Gomez scored the tying run in the seventh inning. The Cardinals’ second baseman Lang and shortstop Schremmer turned a double play to end the threat.
CARDINALS 5, LYONS 2 — Schlochtermeier pitched six shutout innings when Lyons scored two runs in the seventh inning. Third baseman Menges and second baseman Lang turned a fourth-inning double play.
Breit scored a second inning run. Ethan Hubbard and Schremmer scored in the third inning keyed by two errors and two wild pitches. Hanzlick’s double scored Lang and Breit’s single scored hanzlick in a two-run sixth inning.
