Baseball Indians sweep rival Cardinals

LARNED – Larned’s Brandon Ceniceros drilled a grand-slam homer to spark the Indians past rival Hoisington High 6-1 and 13-3 Tuesday’s Central Kansas league doubleheader. Larned adjusted perfectly in 50-degree temperatures with 25 mph northwest winds.
Larned’s baseball team has rebounded with a four-game winning streak after getting routed by Nickerson 29-2 last week. The Indians (6-8) play Hesston at home Friday. Hoisington (3-8) plays Halstead Friday.

LARNED 6, HOISINGTON 1 (G1) — Larned pitcher Alex Barger threw 57 pitches and struck out seven batters in five innings of shutout baseball. Reliever Aidan Smyth struck out five batters and yielded an unearned run.
Larned’s Jordan Taylor singled home Mason Perez for a first-inning run off Hoisington pitcher Avery Brewer. Pinch runner Brayden Lemuz scored an unearned third-inning run off back-to-back errors.
Mason Burris singled home Mello Bryant and Jack Stelter’s sacrifice fly scored Lemuz for a 5-0 lead after five innings. Bryant scored a sixth-run on a double play ball.
Hoisington’s Myles Menges scored on unearned run on a seventh-inning error. The Cardinals featured two baserunners in six innings and Barger picked off baserunner Philip Donecker.

LARNED 13, HOISINGTON 3 (G2) – Ceniceros drove in five runs and benefited from a friendly northwest wind in a six-run second inning.
Ceniceros’ sacrifice fly scored Mason Perez with a first-inning run. Perez was hit by a pitch and Mello Bryant walked to force home runs. Ceniceros’ home run scored Perez, Bryant and Shevin Martin for a 7-0 lead.
Damontay Phillips and Martin scored on a third-inning error for a 9-0 Indian lead. Martin’s two-run double scored Trey Byers and Mason Burris for an 11-0 lead. Martin scored on an error for a 12-0 lead.
Hoisington’s Jerred Bieberle and Jacob Specht delivered run-scoring singles and the Indians contributed three errors for unearned fifth-inning runs off starter Austin Gladow.
Jack Stelter’s game-ending single scored Ceniceros after an error and single by Hunter Fitzpatrick.
