DODGE CITY — The high-flying pole vaulters of the Great Bend High School track and field team had their field locked down at the Western Athletic Conference meet on Thursday.
Chris Burley blew away the boys competition, vaulting to a height of 14 feet, six inches to tie his school record.
“I thought is was good,” Burley said. “I set my goal at 15, but I tied my PR from last meet, so it was a good day. A WAC championship is a WAC championship. You always feel good about that.”
Burley, who won the WAC title in the pole vault last year with a jump of 13 feet, finished two feet ahead of second-place finisher Victor Ortiz of Dodge City.
The Great Bend boys finished fifth in the conference with 35 points. Hays ran away with the meet with 173.
The Lady Panthers claimed fourth place, scoring 53 points while Garden City took first with 124.
“Overall, we were disappointed getting fourth and fifth in the track meet,” GBHS head coach Bo Black said. “I’m not sure we could have done anything different. The kids that came out, most of them did a good job competing. Coming in, we knew it was going to be tough. We didn’t pick up a lot of points that we thought we would, especially on the boys side.
“On the girls side, I thought we did all that we could do.”
Selam Ball topped the girls’ field with a height of 10 feet. Hannah Middleton finished second at nine feet.
“We got first and second in the girls,” Black said. “Selam had a good day at 10 feet. Hannah had a good day at nine. They stayed steady where they’ve been, and we’ll try to get them up another six inches or so.”
Jacy Quade defended her WAC titles in both the girls shot put and the discus.
“Really wasn’t her best day, but she dominated the competition,” Black said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of competition for her today. She really blew the competition away.”
Quade threw 37-5 in the shot put and a distance of 127-5 in the discus to finish first.
Hannah Wondra was the WAC champion in the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:02.16.
“She did a super job,” Black said of Wondra. “She wasn’t feeling good today and bounced back to do some really good things for us.”
Great Bend standout Matt Moyd struggled in his events.
“It was not his best track meet of the year, but he just needs to refocus and get try to get himself into the state track meet,” Black said.
Moyd caught a hurdle in the 110, knocking him down to third place with a time of 15.08. He also had a bad start in the 100 dash, dropping him to 11th place in a time of 11.74.
Great Bend heads to Salina a week from today for the Class 5A regional meet.
