SALINA — Several Great Bend High School track and field athletes qualified for this weekend’s state meet in Wichita after finishing in the top four in their respective events.
Strong winds marred Friday’s Class 5A regional at Salina District Stadium, but it didn’t prevent GBHS from posting impressive individual performances.
“The kids performed extremely well and to get 16 kids into the state meet, we’re real excited about that,” Great Bend head coach Bo Black said.
Here are some of the highlights:
Chris Burley equaled his school record again at 14 feet, six inches in winning the pole vault.
Hannah Wondra ripped off a personal-best time in the 400-meter dash to capture first place, clocking 1:00.42.
Matt Moyd went head-to-head and finished neck-and-neck with Hays’ Adam Deterding in an exciting 110 hurdles, which turned out to be the marquee event of the day.
Deterding won in a time of 14.57, although Moyd set a personal-best time of 14.65 and gave him a huge dose of confidence as he and his teammates head to Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus for this weekend’s state meet.
“He competed very well and bounced back from a tough track meet the week before in the Western Athletic Conference meet in Dodge City,” Black said of Moyd. “He came out and led most of the race (on Friday).
“That Deterding kid that beat him is the best hurdler in the state, and Matt was neck-and-neck with him. It will be exciting again next weekend when those two meet again in the finals at the state meet.”
Moyd said his explosion out of the starting blocks was key.
“I got out fast and ran as hard as I could,” said Moyd, also a state qualifier in the 200 dash. “I’m just looking forward to going to state.”
Wondra, who has signed to run at Benedictine College in Atchison, simply peaked at the right time, just like a number of her teammates.
“She just continues to get better and ran her best time of the year,” Black said of Wondra. “She had a very good race on not the best of conditions for a 400-meter race.
“The wind the way it was, she ran super-strong.”
Senior Jacy Quade became a two-event qualifier, placing second in the discus (123-4) and third in the shot put (35-1¾). Quade is making her third straight trip to the state meet.
Chon Chavez had second-place finishes in his specialties, the 1,600 and 3,200 runs, to advance to state.
Hannha Middleton and Selam Ball finished second and third, respectively, clearing 10 feet and 9-6 to advance.
Freshman standout Jayce Brack uncorked a personal-best throw of 50-1¾ for third place and his first state berth.
Sophomore Darion Yager had a personal-best showing of 42.09 in the 300 intermediate hurdles to qualify.
The GBHS boys’ and girls’ 3,200-meter relay teams also advanced after fourth-place finishes.
