ELLSWORTH – No. 3 state ranked Hoisington earned first place (180) by 80 points over runner-up Nickerson (100).
Cardinal Sean Urban (170, 19-1) was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
“Sean Urban he completely dominated a 170-pound field of top ranked wrestlers on his way to being voted by the coaches as the outstanding wrestler of the tournament,” said Hoisington coach Daniel Schmidt. “He pinned his first three opponents and won 17-6 in the finals.”
Other first-place champions were Cole Steinert (120, 10-7), two-time state champion Christopher Ball (152, 21-0), Tanner Cassity (138, 18-1); Joshua Ball (160, 19-2), and Wyatt Pedigo (182, 17-2). Riley Philborn (285, 10-9) placed runner-up.
“Wow — what a performance from our team,” Schmidt said. “We did a lot of nice things today that led to victories on the mat. Many of the kids will be on brackets at the State Tournament. Our seniors have been great all year. What was not expected was how well our young kids would wrestle. It was a team effort that iced the tournament win for us. Our coaching staff is so proud of these kids. “
The Cardinal junior varsity wrestlers compete Tuesday at Nickerson. Thursday’s Cardinal duals tournament features Hoisington, Plainville, Chaparral, Leon Bluestem, Stafford, and Lincoln.
