HOISINGTON — The Hoisington High School Cardinals wrestling team, following their fourth-place finish at the Bob Kuhn Classic in Hays, took first place at the Cardinal Classic Wrestling Tournament on Friday.
The Cardinals, who are ranked No. 5 in Class 3-1A in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, finished with 230 points, beating seven teams, including second-place Thomas More Prep-Marian with 131 and third-place Cimarron with 118.
“It was Senior Night for our team,” Hoisington head coach Daniel Schmidt said. “It was the last time for our seniors to wrestle at home. What a great way to end their careers at home. To date, the senior class has only lost two duals in their careers, and have won the Cardinal Classic all four years. It was the fourth tournament the team has won this year.”
Hoisington had seven first-place finishes, including Brandon Ball (120), who is ranked No. 4, Chance Demel (145), who is ranked No. 6, Eric Hellerud (182), who is ranked No. 4, Cayton Janousek (195), who is ranked No. 5 and Cody Batt (220), who is ranked No. 3.
Matt Manka (152) took first place, and Landon Harmon, who was only wrestler competing in the 113 weight place, finished in first place.
“The team has six kids ranked in the top six and is ranked in one poll third and in another fifth,” Schmidt said. “The team will find out how good they are at the 3-1A level when they compete in Panther Classic this weekend (in Phillipsburg).
“Most of the teams in the top ten of the rankings will be there, along with some that are consistently at the top of the class year in and year out will be there as well.”
The Cardinals travel to Phillipsburg on Saturday. The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
