Cardinals claim Keady Basketball Classic title

LARNED — The Hoisington High School boys’ basketball team didn’t seal the deal until the final seconds of the championship game of the Keady Basketball Classic on Saturday night.
With the final seconds ticking off, Macksville put up a contested 3-pointer which fell wide. Hoisington scooped up the rebound to finish the game with a 57-56 win.
“It was wild,” Hoisington head coach Kyle Haxton said. “We had a couple of chances to seal it at the free-throw line, but Macksville just kept pushing.”
The Mustangs jumped ahead 37-28 after the first half thanks to Adma Oak, who scored 14 points in the first 16 minutes on his way to a team-leading 19 points.
“Their guards gave us fits in the first half,” Haxton said. “Well, actually they gave us fits throughout the game. They just kept hitting shots, and they did a really good job guarding Derrick (Kaiser), and keeping him from scoring.
“I have to give (Macksville head coach) Jeff (Kuckelman) credit. He did a great job preparing his team for us.”
Oak and Seth Filbert, who finished with nine points including 6-for-7 from the free-throw line, hit a 3-pointer each to open the game, putting the Cardinals down 6-0 early.
“I told my guys in the locker room before the game that there would be a time during the game that they would have to fight,” Haxton said. “We faced adversity early in this game, and we didn’t respond very well.”
Kaiser, the Cardinals leading scorer this season, finished with eight points, and didn’t sink a field goal until the third quarter.
In his place, 6-foot-8 center Cody Stetler took over the game as a mismatch for the Mustangs.
Macksville’s tallest player is ColtenAry at 6-4, but most of the night, 6-2 Adolfo Ibarra battled in the paint against Stetler, who finished with a game-high 25 points.
“He got a lot of points off of offensive rebounds,” Haxton said. “He was just a size issue for Macksville. He did a good job defending Ibarra on the other end as well.”
Ibarra finished with 10 points.
According to Haxton, Anthony Broeder is the hero of the game, scoring 14 points for the Cardinals, including five in the final quarter.
“He was just incredible in the second half,” Haxton said of Broeder. “He was getting rebounds. He was driving the ball in the lane. He was finishing at the rim, and he was able to hit some free throws.”
Hoisington travels to Sedgwick on Tuesday.
Macksville is back in action on Friday night when it hosts Kiowa County.
