DODGE CITY — The Great Bend High School girls’ cross country team finished in second place with 45 points at the Western Athletic Conference meet on Thursday.
The boys finished in fourth place.
Kaitlyn Tuey led the Lady Panthers, finishing in fourth place with a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds, earning her an All-WAC honor.
Mariah Stein, who took seventh place with a time of 16:43, and Hannah Wondra, who finished in eighth place with a time of 16:51, both were honorable mention.
“The girls got second place, which is where we thought they would be,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said. “I was very pleased with how the girls competed. Garden City is pretty dang tough. Having one All-WAC and two honorable mention runners, that’s a pretty solid run.”
The boys, who finished in fourth place in the meet with a score of 78, were led by Chon Chavez.
Chavez, the only all-conference runner for the boys, finished in fifth place with a time of 17:35.
“Obviously, fourth place isn’t what I was hoping for,” Kaiser said. “I was disappointed with how the team did, especially since we were just three points out of third place. I was very happy for Chon getting All-WAC, and I thought Ky Heeke ran well. But I was just disappointed with most of the team.
“The important thing now is to put it behind us, learn from it and do what we got to do at regionals.”
Great Bend will compete at the Class 5A regional meet in Newton on Saturday, Oct. 22.
