WICHITA — Five-time Class 5A defending champion Wichita Carroll breezed past Great Bend 10-0 in the regional softball championship game Wednesday. Carroll (22-0) has won 72 consecutive games the past three seasons.
Great Bend (14-8) was paced by Kendal Sell with two base hits. Lauren Welsch and Emma Cape also delivered base hits. Two of the Panther baserunners were thrown out on the bases.
Carroll’s Maddie Miller drilled a three-run homer in the first inning off pitcher Hunter Marcum and Callie Gowing hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles have hit 40 home runs.
Gowing singled home Kaylin Watkins in the first inning. Emma Eck drove home Meggan Gutierrez in the second inning. Brianna Hogan led off the fourth inning with a homer and Gowing followed with a three-run homer for a 9-0 lead. Miller’s RBI single scored Gutierrez with the game-winning run.

Brooklyn Burkhart keyed an eight-run fourth inning with a bases-loaded triple. Baylee Beck and Morgan Kottas started the rally with singles. Kendal Sell, Lauren Welsch and Mikayla Bownes delivered RBI singles for a 3-3 tie. Emma Cape to force a run home. Burkhart drilled a triple that scored welsch, Bownes and Cape for a 7-3 lead. Beck’s RBI single drove home Burkhart for an 8-3 lead.
