A new era might have started for the Great Bend High School boys’ cross-country team.
The Kerby Depenbusch era.
The freshman turned in a time of 16:58.03 to win the Great Bend Invitational on Thursday evening at Barton Lake.
The Great Bend boys tied for second place with Liberal with 70 points, but took third after the tiebreaker.
“Overall, with the boys, we just got to get our two, three, four and five guys packed up better,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said. “Kerby’s going to do what Kerby’s going to do. He’s going to run out ahead. We just got to get the rest of those guys packed in, and keep plugging the gap with our six and seven runners.”
Great Bend’s girls finished in sixth place overall with 107 points. The Lady Panthers fell just behind Salina South, which had 105 points for fourth place, and Garden City, which placed fifth with 106 points.
For the Panthers, Adam Jacobs finished in 11th place to earn a medal, clocking in at 18:34.61
“Adam Jacobs had a great race today,” Kaiser said. “He was really happy with his time. I know it was close to his (personal record).”
Great Bend had two more runners join Depenbusch and Jacobs in the top 20.
Eric Vazquez placed 18th (18:43.64) and Cole Mulch finished in 20th (18:53.49).
Mary Williams led the Lady Panthers, finishing in fourth place at 17:10.52.
“I was pleased to see Mary Williams run a nice race,” Kaiser said. “Karen (Razo) placed 12th in her first meet out. I don’t have her times from last year, but I think it’s close to one of her best.”
Razo was the only other Great Bend girl in the top 20 with a time of 18:18.66 for 12th place.
Lady Eagles win invite
The Ellinwood High School girls’ cross-country team locked down first place in their first meet of the season.
The Lady Eagles finished with 55 points, topping second-place Liberal, which finished with 63.
Joanna Strecker placed third, leading Ellinwood with a time of 17:10.20.
Abbie Reichuber placed sixth (17:17.90), Maddie Hayes finished in 10th (18:04.86) and Caylie Carman took 17th (18:46.53) to finish in the top 20.
“We had a girl go down during the race,” Ellinwood head coach Lyle Lashley said. “We had a freshman girl step up for her first race ever. Really, Chelsea Casper and Caylie Carman really stepped up for us.”
On the boys’ side, Ellinwood only had two runners compete in the varsity race.
Morgan Feemster finished in the top 20, placing seventh with a time of 17:58.00.
