WICHITA — Both the Ellinwood High School doubles team and the singles player fell in the first round of the Class 3-1A state tennis tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Kale Clawson and Kyle Blakeslee fell 7-5, 7-5 against Kansas City Christian.
As a results of losing the first round, Clawson and Blakeslee only played one more match, a 9-4 win over Southwestern Heights.
“They’re either on or they’re not,” Ellinwood head coach Lyle Stickney said. “They just weren’t on in that first match. When they are on, they’re tough to beat, it just didn’t happen for them in that first round.
“They salvaged a win in the second round, though.”
Marc Waite, a freshman singles player who played for the junior varsity until the Mid-Central Activities Association tournament, lost to a player from Immaculata 6-0, 6-1.
Waite defeated a player from Scott City 9-1 in the second round.
“He went into the state tournament with a 1-0 varsity record,” Stickney said. “He just got a bad draw in that first round. He was paired up with a kid that eventually took second, I believe.”
