STERLING — For the first time in Ellinwood High School history, the boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams won the same regular season meet.
The Eagles finished with 28 points, beating second-place Hutchinson Trinity (38) on Thursday evening.
The Lady Eagles finished with 38 points to best Haven, which finished second with 60.
“Our guys have run well all year,” Ellinwood head coach Lyles Lashley said. “The girls are finally all healthy, and they’re running pretty well. They put in a good team effort.”
Junior Pedro Montoya captured first place in the meet, continuing his season-long winning streak. He crossed the finish line at 16 minutes, 11.18 seconds.
“He broke the course record,” Lashley said of Montoya. “The last three weeks, he’s run a (personal-best time). He just keeps pushing himself, and it’s nice to see all that hard work paying off.”
Jenna Snell led the girls squad, capturing fourth with a time of 15:48.76.
“The girls packed up real well,” Lashley said. “They understand that they got to start working together as a team, which is good because we’re getting to the last part of our season.”
Lashley said that his teams are looking strong heading into the final meet of the regular season, a Mid-Central Activities Association meet on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.
“Over the last two weeks, there’s not much you can do conditioning-wise to improve,” Lashley said. “You just have to keep working together, and settle in to get everything ready to peak.
