Ellinwood girls play for state title

PRATT — Ellinwood stunned perennial powerhouse Udall 11-10 Friday to qualify for the school's first-ever Class 2A state softball championship. Ellinwood led 9-5 before Udall rallied for a 9-9 tie. Ellinwood rallied for the victory. The Eagles (20-3) play Valley Falls (21-4) in Friday's state championship

ELLINWOOD 3, REPUBLIC COUNTY 0 -- Pitcher Allison Panning struck out 11 batters to lead Ellinwood’s girls past Belleville-Republic County 3-0 in the Class 2-1A state softball tournament.
Ellinwood (19-3) plays Udall (21-3) in Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinals. Sedan (23-1) and Valley Falls (20-4) play in the other semifinal.
The Eagles scored three runs off Republic County starter Madison Hammond. Mattie Shafer delivered a two-run double and Jenna Oelke drove in a run.
Brynlee Baker singled and Oelke’s RBI single drove her home for a 1-0 lead. Brittney Beck reached base when catcher Keyona Reed dropped a third strike. Mattie Shafer’s double scored Oelke and Beck for a 3-0 lead.

Panning stranded two baserunners in the second and sixth innings. She retired Tony Dahl in the second inning with two runners on base. Panning struck out Brittany McLean and retired Keyona Reed on a pop fly in the sixth to strand two runners.
