Ellinwood girls track wins Kiowa Co. meet, boys place eighth

GREENSBURG— It was a golden start to the month of May for Ellinwood’s girls track and field team as the Eagles finished with a 109-point house cleaning to win Friday’s 16-team Kiowa County Invitational.

A 37-point gap separated the Eagles from runner up and host Kiowa County who finished with 72 points. A one point difference separated South Gray (49) from Skyline (48) for third place.

In the boys division, Ellinwood finished with 35 points and an eighth place slot. South Gray won the boys meet with 116 points.

In girls running events, Joanna Strecker finished with a top time of 2:31.50 to win the 800 meter run. Emma Ricker won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.11. The Eagles won two of the three relay events. In the 4x400, Bailey Baird, Carmen Cailey, Ricker and Anna Fisher won gold timing in at 4:18.62. Cailey then joined Abbie Reichuber, Maddie Hayes and Strecker to win the 4X800 at 10:42.05.

In other girls performances, McKenna Rugan placed second and third in the 100 and 200 meter sprints at 12.78 and 28.20 respectively. Baird won the bronze in the 400 meter with a time of 1:03.68, just nine one-hundredths of a second behind runner up Emily Salmans of South Gray.

In long distance, Strecker placed third in the 1600 meter run at 5:52.50 while Reichuber finished second in the 3200 meter at 12.23.21.

In the field, Maddie Hayes had a pair of second place finishes in the pole vault (6.06 ft.) and javelin (112.02 ft.). Teammate Cassie Dimmitt place third in the javelin with a throw of 106.04 ft.

In boys competition, Avery Pike, Destin Baker, Morgan Feemster and Jacob Kasselman won the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:14.01. Pike finished third in the 400 meter dash at 56.34.
