GREENSBURG — The Ellinwood High School girls’ track team took second place at the Class 2A regional track and field meet at Kiowa County on Friday.
The Lady Eagles qualified 11 girls for the state track meet at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium in Wichita. The meet begins Friday and concludes on Saturday.
Ellinwood qualified for nine individual events as well as the 4x100- and 4x800-meter relays.
“It was a phenomenal meet for the girls,” Ellinwood head coach Lyles Lashley said. “It seemed like every event in track we competed in, we would advance to state.”
The Lady Eagles were led by the two relay teams, which broke school records in each event.
The 4x100 relay team qualified with a time of 51.56 seconds, topping the school record of 51.80 set in 1993. The 4x800 relay team broke a school record for the second time this season with a time of 10:03.09.
The Ellinwood boys qualified two athletes for the track meet — freshman Pedro Montoya in the 3,200 run (10:10.43) and senior Jacob Christiansen in the shot put (45 feet, 1/2 inches).
“We actually had a good meet for the boys,” Lashley said. “We just didn’t have very many entries. It was nice to see the freshman make his first state in the two mile and it is always good to see a senior go out on top, qualifying for the shot put.”
