Out of the five first-place finishes for the Great Bend High School track and field teams on Tuesday evening at the Great Bend Invitational, none were so closely watched as the girls’ pole vault.
Not only was it the final event to finish up at Memorial Stadium, but Lady Panthers senior Selam Ball broke the GBHS record of 10-6.
Ball reached 11-0 to win the event.
“It feels great,” Ball said. “I’m happy to break it. I thought I could push it a couple inches at a time after I hit 10-6, but my coaches were really confident and told me to raise it up to 11-0 and I did.
“I was happy with it. Almost made 11-6. That was my goal overall this year. I didn’t expect to make 11-0 this early, but now that I have, why not 12-0?”
On Ball’s final attempt at 11-6, she made it over but caught the bar on her lip on the way down.
“Selam breaking the school record at 11-0 is fantastic,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said. “I’m really happy for her. She’s going to get to compete at the KU relays on Friday morning. That’s going to be exciting for her, to compete in a big-time atmosphere like that.
“But it’s nice to see her have that kind of performance, breaking the school record at home like this in front of the home folks.”
The Great Bend’s boys finished in fourth place with 52 points. The girls finished in sixth with 22 points.
Sophomore Shelby Tracy was the other Lady Panthers athlete to win an event.
Tracy jumped 15 feet, five inches to win the long jump by one inch.
Jayce Brack locked in the No. 1 spot in both the shot put and the discus.
Brack won the shot put with a heave of 58-1.
He won the discus with a launch of 156-9. Nick Warren placed second in the discus at 155-8.
Antonio Carrasco won the 400-meter dash, clockgin in at 52.65.
“There are so many positives with the boys,” Kaiser said. “They just keep getting better and better. Cristian Garcia is just showing tremendous leadership this year with that middle distance and sprinter group there.
“Christian Graham has been injured. His lower back has been bothering him, and he still came out and run a 4:45 today. That’s five seconds better than what he ran down in Wichita.”
Graham isn’t the only one feeling the bumps and bruises of the season. Kaiser said that he hopes a long break between meets is exactly what the team needs.
“Our kids have put in a lot of meets early this year,” Kaiser said. “Now we have a little bit of a break. We don’t run again until (Friday, April 25) in Buhler, so we’ve got us a nice little chance for the kids to recover and rest a little bit.”
