Four Panther wrestlers place in 5A

PARK CITY — No. 3 state-ranked Drew Liles (41-8, 113) led four Great Bend wrestlers with a third-place finish in the Class 5A state wrestling championships. Liles downed Emporia’s Levi Buckridge 1-0 for third place and won four of five matches. Newton’s 5A state champion Logan Treaster beat Liles 10-2 in the semifinals.
Liles pinned Topeka Seaman’s Kyle Adams (3:38), downed Blue Valley Southwest’s Justin Williams 3-1 and beat KC Schlagle’s Jonah Andrew 4-0.
The Panthers scored 49 points to place 13th. Goddard scored 236.5 points to defend its 5A state wrestling title.
Carsyn Schooler (21-11, 120) and No. 5 ranked George Weber (42-11) both placed fifth with victories Saturday. Schooler downed Goddard Eisenhower;’s Seth Doud 18-14 for fifth place. Weber beat Aquinas John Akin 4-2 for the second time after an identical 4-2 victory in the quarterfinals. Weber lost 5-2 to runner-up Aidan Campbell of Maize.
Gage Fritz (35-11, 152) placed sixth with a 3-0 loss to Goddard’s Trevor Dopps. State runner-up Jarrett Bendure of Mill Valley downed Fritz 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Panthers Braxton Schooler (20-22, 138), Alex Randolph (28-18, 145), Jeffrey Spragis (22-21, 160) and Jacob Meeks (18-17, 182) also competed in the 5A state wrestling tournament.
