The Great Bend High School boys’ swim team missed first place by 31 points at Tuesday afternoon’s swim meet at Kirkman Activity Center.
“We finished second to Hays,” GBHS head coach Steve Beaumont said. “It was fairly close. We beat them in a couple of relays, which we hadn’t in previous years. We kept the score pretty even throughout the meet.
“Overall, I thought we swam well.”
The Panthers finished with 285 points behind first-place Hays’ 316.
Great Bend was led by Justin Kuhlman, who finished first in the 100-meter backstroke, clocking in at 59.37. He also finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.47.
It was Senior Recognition Night as it was the final home meet of the season. Great Bend had eight swimmers recognized — Nathan Brungardt, Ky Heeke, Jake Kohman, Austin Levingston, Nick Moyers, Nick Porter, Tristan Yount and David Webster.
“There’s a lot of experience in that group, especially when you think that most of the rest of the team is made up of freshman and sophomores,” Beaumont said. “They’ve been good leaders, and they’ve done a fantastic job setting an example for the rest of the team.
“They’re good men in there, and I’m sure proud of them.”
Great Bend’s Kuhlman, Cory Merten, Heeke and Moyers combined for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. They finished at 1:55.94.
The team joined forces again for first place, this time in the 400 freestyle relay, touching in at 3:41.11.
The Panthers swim again on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Salina South.
