LIBERAL — Cutting loose for their best half of the season, the Great Bend High School Lady Panthers rallied to beat host Liberal 39-19 on Friday night in Western Athletic Conference action.
“We were behind 13-11 at halftime and we felt like we were doing the same stuff offensively that we had been doing in January,” said Great Bend head coach Jason Tatkenhorst, whose team improved 2-13, 1-3 in winning their first conference game.
“Finally the girls relaxed on offense and took their time shooting and we outscored them 28-6 in the second half. It was just an outstanding second half for us.”
The Lady Panthers got their shots in the first half, but they just wouldn’t go down. But they were able to turn it around after the break, led by sophomore guard McKenna Mauler, who scored 10 points.
“Regan Unruh hit a big 3 in the second half that got everybody going.”
Unruh finished with seven points, and Liz Kutina added six points.
“Not only get a victory over anybody, but it was also our first WAC victory and we knew if we lost we’d be 0-4 in the WAC, we would finish near the bottom.
“Now we play everybody one more time and who knows what can happen. Maybe we can move up, and maybe it’s started something good for February.”
