GARDEN CITY — The Great Bend High School bowling team —  both boys and girls — took second place at the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Garden City on Thursday.
The Panthers missed topping WAC leader Garden City by 22 pins, finishing with 2,524.
The loss brings the boys to 11-3 overall, 6-3 in the WAC.
Dakota Conaway took first place as an individual, tying Jacob Brungardt of Garden City with the top series at the tournament. Conaway bowled the top game between the two to win the tiebreaker.
Eric Ruiz, who rolled a 628 series in Garden City, won the WAC MVP award and was the top of the All-WAC team.
Conaway joined him on the all-conference team, and Tyler Jones and Daniel Herrman each made the All-WAC Honorable Mention team.
The Lady Panthers took second place with 2,186, dropping the tournament to Dodge City, which bowled a 2,244.
While adding the lone blemish on an otherwise perfect record, 13-1 overall and 8-1 in WAC play, the loss did not take away Great Bend’s top spot in the WAC standings.
Miranda Hejny led the Lady Panthers, knocking down a 609 series. Hejny was WAC MVP, third place in the individual finishers at the tournament and at the top of the all-conference team roster.
Jacy Quade, who bowled a 517, also made the list of All-WAC performers.
Koa Pelster and Kellie Kirmer both made the All-WAC honorable mention list.
Mike Perry was awarded the WAC Girls Coach of the Year.
