SALINA — A week after opening the high school season in Hays, Great Bend head girls’ golf coach Troy Stein said he saw improvement across the board on Tuesday afternoon at the Salina Central tournament.
The Lady Panthers, who placed fifth in the tournament, combined for a team score of 205. Manhattan won the nine-team field at 178.
“We played well,” Stein said. “I was happy with how we shot today. Everyone who played last Tuesday (in Hays) shot better (in Salina).
“Everyone got to play. The junior varsity played six holes on a par-3 course.”
Senior McKenna Mauler led Great Bend, carding a 47 at the nine-hole tournament. She tied for 10th place, but lost in a tiebreaker.
“The tiebreaker goes to the handicap, basically the toughest hole on the course,” Stein said. “They tied on that hole, so it went to the next hole, and she lost.
“She’s our senior leader. I can always expect her to contend for a medal anywhere we go. She didn’t win a medal, but she had a pretty good day today.”
Junior Taylor Mohr was Great Bend’s No. 2 golfer, shooting a 51.
Hannah Mauler finished at 53, Michaela Cape was right behind her at 54, Maddie Vesta carded a 57 and Kacee Kasselman shot a 64.
Great Bend travels to Dodge City on Thursday. The tournament starts at 3 p.m.
“We have two (tournaments) this week,” Stein said. “We’ve been playing well. This will be our first 18-hole contest, so we’ll see if we can hold up through that.”
