JUNCTION CITY — A pair of 2012 Class 5A state track and field meet qualifiers highlighted Great Bend High School’s season-opening meet at Junction City on Thursday night.
Junior pole vaulter Selam Ball claimed first place for the Lady Panthers, who finished fourth overall, and sophomore thrower Jayce Brack claimed first in the shot put and second in the discus for the Panthers, who took third out of seven teams.
“I thought we did just fine,” Great Bend head coach Bo Black said. “The kids competed hard. We had a lot of kids who were good athletes for us last year picked right back up again.
“We also had a lot of young kids compete well.”
Ball reached a height of 10 feet to claim the top spot. Great Bend senior Hannah Middleton cleared 9-6 for second place.
Brack had a toss of 50-7 in the shot put, and 136-5 in the discus.
Senior Kole Stiner had a great meet for the Panthers, according to Black, claiming two individual first-place finishes and one as part of the 4x800-meter relay team.
Stiner won the 800 run (2:06.47) and the 1,600 (2:42.64).
Stiner joined teammates Chon Chavez, Cristian Garcia and Richard Lara for a winning time of 8:26.74 in the 4x800.
GBHS is idle for a week before hosting the Great Bend Invitational on Tuesday, April 9. The meet starts at 3:30 p.m.
The junior varsity squad will compete at a meet in Ellinwood on Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m.
