A pair of Great Bend High School boys’ soccer players each finished with a hat trick as the Panthers ran away from Junction City on Thursday evening 10-0 at Cavanaugh Fields.
Emmanuel Poblano and Michael Prieto each scored three goals to lead the Panthers’ attack.
“In the first half, we had some troubles,” Great Bend head coach Gus Prieto said of his team, which led 4-0 at halftime. “They put a lot of people back. It was difficult to open the defense. We started to try something different.
“We started to move the ball outside, make some shots, that way we can open some space.”
The game ended 17 minutes early due to the 10-goal rule.
“We just moved the ball around very well, and I just found an opening and shot it,” Poblano said. “We didn’t really know what to expect from them. We just went along with what they gave us, and they were letting us move the ball around pretty well. They didn’t pressure much, and they let us play our own game.”
Great Bend also got one goal each from Rafael Arias, Richard Lara, Joaquin Garcia and Carlos Prado.
The Panthers travel to Hays on Tuesday. The junior varsity game starts at 4 p.m., and the varsity game follows at 5:30.
