The 2018 Great Bend Legion Chiefs open their baseball schedule this week.

OTTAWA — The 2018 Great Bend Legion Chiefs open their baseball schedule with four games at the Ottawa Tournament. The Chiefs 19-and-under team plays Ottawa and the Kansas Senators Saturday and Salina and a fourth game Sunday. 
The Chiefs’ home opener is scheduled June 7 against Ellinwood at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

The Chiefs (23-14) finished as AAA state runner-up after back-to-back losses to Ottawa 9-1 and 8-2. The Chiefs advanced to the AAA state championship round by beating the Hays Eagles 3-1 and McPherson 9-8 in Zone and beating Chanute 2-0, Nickerson 5-4 and the Hays Eagles 10-7 at state.

HAYS — Sylvan Grove’s Legion baseball team rallied for a 5-4 victory over Ellinwood on Colin Obermueller’s game-winning single in Wednesday’s AA Russell Zone baseball tournament. The game was moved to Hays from Russell because of a unplayable field.Ellinwood (9-10) plays Thursday against the Marysville-Smith Center loser.Ellinwood led 4-1 after 41/2 innings. Sylvan Grove led 1-0 when Dylan Fry scored a first-inning run.Ellinwood’s Levi Swenson scored a second-inning run on a double steal with Evan Johanning.
