LAWRENCE — The Great Bend High School girls’ cross-country team finished in 21st place in the Blue Division at Rim Rock Farm.
The boys’ team finished in 30th place.
The key for both teams heading in was to get experience running the course.
“We use this meet to get an idea of what the course is like,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said. “They change it a little bit each year, and we also get our new runners some experience running the course in case they qualify for the state meet.”
Kaiser said he was pleased with his teams’ performances.
“Considering we got in late last night so we could stay for the halftime homecoming events (Friday night),” Kaiser said, “we did OK. They had a long day, but I was happy with how they came out and competed.”
Freshman Kerby Depenbusch was Great Bend’s top competitor. He finished with a time of 17:00 for 14th place.
“Kerby, as a freshman, it was a great thing to see him come away with a medal,” Kaiser said. “That was a good one for him to experience.
“He told me after he was done, ‘That was a killer course.’ ”
Karen Razo led the girls’ team with a 47th-place finish at 17:44.
 
Lady Eagles place third
in Blue Division
LAWRENCE — The Ellinwood girls’ cross-country team finished in third place in their division at Rim Rock.
Ellinwood’s girls finished with 213 points, trailing Maranatha Academy, which had 158 points, and Parkway Central, which finished with 166.
The Lady Eagles were led by Joanna Strecker, who placed 16th overall with a time of 16:41.
Abbie Reichuber was Ellinwood’s No. 2 runner at 35th place at 17:22.
The Eagles didn’t have a team score, but Morgan Feemster turned in Ellinwood’s greatest individual performance.
He finished sixth overall with a time of 17:23.
