Great Bend’s Kelby Titus tied for second-best score (76) at the Great Bend Golf Invitational Monday at Stoneridge Country Club. Titus finished fourth after scores were compared on the toughest handicap holes. Garden City freshman Sion Audrain placed first with a 1-under-par score of 71.
Titus continued his streak of top 10 finishes this spring. After shooting 42 on the front nine, Titus shot 1-under 34 on the back nine, keyed by two birdies and six pars.
“Kelby had a solid tournament with an especially good back-nine holes,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “That put him in a 3-way tie for second place. After the scorecard playoff, he finished as fourth medalist.”
Garden City captured the team title (320) two strokes ahead of Hays High (322). Great Bend (403) placed eighth and counted scores by Andrew Erb (101), Jared Divis (112) and Aaron Stein (114). Great Bend is the site of a Class 5A regional May 16.
“Although our team score is improving some, we are still far from competing well with better teams,” McAtee said. “Overall, we have to score better at our home course if we’re going to compete better at the regional tournament at Great Bend in a couple of weeks.”
