Garden City’s girls stunned red-hot Great Bend with a second-half goal for a 1-0 victory that snapped the Panthers’ three-game winning streak. The Panthers (3-1, 1-1) played its third game of the week, which included a road trip to Liberal.
Tiffany Butler set up teammate Emmeline Gomez for the game-winner with 9:36 left in the second half. Butler passed from the back post to the middle of the box.
The Panthers missed several quality chances. Keely Ireland fired a shot into the side netting with 22 minutes left. Alondra Garcia hit a free kick over the crossbar with two minutes to play.
The Buffaloes (3-2, 1-1 WAC) scored after keeping the pressure on during the second half.
“My players were tired,” said Great Bend Coach Gus Prieto. “We had a few chances and they had a few chances.”
The Panthers play again Monday at home against Dodge City.
