LIBERAL – No. 10 seed Great Bend stunned No. 7 seed Liberal 2-1 in Tuesday’s Class 5A soccer regional after losing to the Redskins twice during the season. The Panthers just made the 170-mile trip to Liberal last week.

Panther Erick Martinez and Dani Franco scored goals to boost Great Bend, which lost 5-2 and 4-1 to Liberal during the season. A corner kick by Mauricio Hernandez set up Martinez’s score after 10 minutes. Alonso Alonzo’s assist set up Franco for a 2-0 lead halfway through the second half.

“I was very proud that we played our best game of the year,” said Great Bend coach Jesus Loera. “It was gratifying to see our guys perform so well. We had a lot of things to overcome. It took everything we had to beat a strong Liberal team.”

Loera said the Panthers passed the ball and kept possession.

“That limited their offensive opportunities,” Loera said. “We possessed the ball much better this time.”

Great Bend goalie Daniel Cervantes shut out Liberal for more than 70 minutes. Defenders Darien Sanchez and Anthony Brown led the backline defense.

“Our two center-backs played a great game,” he said.

The Panthers (9-7-1) will play No. 2 seed Wichita-Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (13-3-1) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
