Great Bend softball loses three of four

OLATHE – Shailey Clark’s two-run double delivered the game-winning run and pitcher Hunter Marcum preserved Great Bend’s 9-8 softball victory over Olathe North in Friday’s Sunflower Festival. Defending Class 6A state champion Olathe South defeated Great Bend 10-0 in Friday’s first game.

The Panthers were run-ruled in both games Saturday – losing 12-2 to Lawrence High and 16-1 to Lawrence Free State. The Panthers were outscored 46-12 in the four games against top caliber softball teams. Great Bend played eight softball games in five days.

Great Bend (8-4, 6-0 WAC) will need to beat defending champion Garden City once Thursday at Garden City to gain a share of the WAC championship.

LIONS 16, PANTHERS 1 – Karly Johnson and Angelina Harjo homered and pitcher Zoe Brewer limited the Panthers to one hit. Shailey Clark’s single scored Aleah Unruh with the Panthers’ run after walks to Unruh and Emma Cape. Panther backup pitcher Shaenaia Mehlhaff was roughed up for 16 runs.

FIREBIRDS 12, PANTHERS 2 – Emma Cape’s RBI single drove home Urban and Clark’s double drove home Urban for the Panthers’ two runs. The red-hot Urban was hitless in three of the games. She is batting .656 – 21 for 32.

PANTHERS 9, EAGLES 8 – Marcum preserved the victory by striking out Maddie Stipsits in the sixth inning with two out and Lexie Schroeder in the seventh inning with the tying and go-ahead runners on base with two out.

Clark’s double scored Kendel Sell and Aleah Urban after a single and walk in a two-run sixth inning.

The Panthers scored seven runs in the second inning for a 7-2 lead. Jenna Mauler and Kendel Sell delivered two-run doubles and Kailee McMullen’s RBI single started the seven-run inning. Emma Cape, Clark, Allison Neeland, Brooklyn Burkhart, Mauler, Sell and Urban scored runs.

Riley Shaw paced the Eagles with a three-run homer and four RBIs.

EAGLES 10, PANTHERS 0 – Olathe North pitcher Maryssa Rollin threw a one-hit shutout and sparked a seven-run first inning with a two-run homer.

Brooklyn Burkhart delivered the Panthers’ base hit.

Alex Clark, Morgan Kern, Aubrey Griffith, Ryleigh Dikin and Casey Shell drove in runs.
