Great Bend softball sweeps Liberal

LIBERAL — Great Bend’s softball team rolled past Liberal 19-0 and 22-0 to open Western Athletic Conference play Thursday. Panther pitchers Hunter Marcum and Hannah Honomichl each threw one-hit shutouts. Liberal committed 16 errors in the twin bill.
In the opener, Lauren Welsch drove in five runs. Kendel Sell drove in three runs with two hits. Carly Dreiling drove in two runs with two hits. Morgan Kottas had two hits. In the first inning, Welsch’s bases-loaded walk forced in a run. Emma Cape singled home two runs. Welsch scored on a passed ball. Marcum’s double drove home Cape for a 5-0 lead.
In the nightcap, Kendel Sell drove in five runs with three hits. Audrianna Bender drove in three runs. Honomichl drove in three runs with hits. Carly Dreiling had three hits.
In the first inning, Sell singled home Morgan Kottas and Dreiling scored on an error for a 2-0 lead. Honomichl’s single drove home Sell. Bender’s sacrifice fly scored Honomichl for a 4-0 lead after one inning.
