LIBERAL — Nick Ney improved his record to 2-0 on the season on Tuesday afternoon, pitching a complete game and scattering six hits during an 8-2 victory over Liberal in the Western Athletic Conference baseball opener for both teams.
The Panthers (6-0, 2-0) completed the sweep by drubbing the Redskins 17-0 in the nightcap.
“We just pounded the ball,” Great Bend head coach Randy Cole said of his team, which built a 14-0 lead in the top of the first after sending 19 hitters to the plate. “We gave Mitch (Kottas) some room to work with.”
Darien Blackwill hit a two-run home run and Jeff Pike added a two-run, opposite-field single to highlight the Panthers’ blowout win in game two.
Great Bend returns home on Thursday to take on Hoisington in non-conference action, starting at 4 p.m.
