Great Bend travels to Hays for hoops today

The Great Bend High School boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams travel to Hays today for Western Athletic Conference action.
The girls varsity game is set to tip off at 5:45 p.m., followed by the varsity boys.
Both Hays varsity teams are 4-3 overall, 1-0 in the WAC after beating Liberal last Friday.
Great Bend’s boys are 1-6, 0-1 and its girls are 0-7, 0-1. Both GBHS teams lost to Garden City at home last Friday night in conference-opening play.

Great Bend’s varsity wrestling team took part in the Derby Invitational over the weekend.
Chris Burley, a defending Class 5A state champion for the Panthers at 112 pounds last March, lost a tough match to Garden City’s Anthony Calderon 5-3 in the 120-pound championship dual on Saturday. Calderon is top-ranked in 6A, and Burley is ranked No. 2 in 5A in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, released on Dec. 22.
Justin Henry (182) was a fourth-place finisher for the Panthers at Derby, and Brodie Bretz (138) and Darian Yager (160) each secured sixth-place finishes for Great Bend.
Great Bend travels to Wichita for a varsity meet at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. The junior varsity team will be competing in Hays the same day, starting at 9:30.
