Bowling at the collegiate level has been the plan for 2013 Great Bend High School graduate Danny Herrman for a while.
Things are going to plan as the Class 5-1A state champion has picked up a scholarship to play for NCAA Division-I Newman University in Wichita.
“That’s been the plan since freshman year,” Herrman said. “I’m excited to play in college.”
Herrman said he wasn’t sure about the amount of the scholarship because the paperwork was still in the mail.
“I got a text from Coach (Billy Murphy),” Herrman said. “He said that the paperwork is done, but it hasn’t gotten here yet. I think it’s $2,000.”
Herrman said he chose Newman because it was a comfortable fit.
“It kind of resembles here,” Herrman said. “The coach is really nice, and I know a couple people who play there.”
That’s not to say it’s going to be the same for Herrman, who rolled a 759 in the state tournament to win an individual crown to cap his senior campaign.
“It’s going to be hectic,” said Herrman, who was a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection. “I don’t know what to expect. It’s not like high school at all where there are some schools that are just stacked and they beat up on everyone else.
“Everyone’s going to be competitive.”
He bowled games of 270, 256 and 233 in the state competition.
“At the state tournament, he was clearly locked in and his pregame words were simply, ‘One time,’ ” Great Bend head coach Mike Perry said. “I am proud to have had the opportunity to coach Daniel and look forward to watching him in all his future endeavors.”
Herrman was one of five seniors that helped lead the Panthers to the first state bowling title in school history.
“Danny is one of the most hardworking boys to ever come through the Panthers bowling program,” Perry said. “I feel that he will be successful at the next level because of his strong work ethic and his loyalty as a teammate.”
