LARNED — The Hoisington High School boys’ basketball team earned a win against host Larned in the semifinal game at the Keady Basketball Classic 68-35.
But it wasn’t pretty.
The Cardinals and the Indians beat the classic record for most fouls in a single game, falling short of tying the record after the first half of play.
It’s two teams playing pretty poor defense in my opinion,” Hoisington head coach Kyle Haxton said. “Not wanting to move our feet. Not stepping up and helping on penetration. A lot of reaching, shoving. It just wasn’t clean basketball. It wasn’t fun to coach. It’s not fun to play, or not play if that be the case, because it was taking them out of the game with foul trouble.”
They combined for 55 fouls to beat the previous record of 40, which was set by Chase-Haviland, set it in 2004, and Spearville-Macksville which tied the record in 2008.
Larned head coach Kevin Brown, who is in his first season as head coach of the Indians, said that the fouls came from his team trying to compensate for the size difference.
“First of all, we’re not going to take (Cody) Stetler out of the game,” Larned head coach Kevin Brown said of the 6-foot-8 junior post player. “We worked real hard so that every time he got the ball there were two people around him. When he shot it, he wasn’t going to get a second shot, and for the most part, we did a pretty good job. But that entails playing pretty physical.
“Both teams kind of got a little bit more physical and by the end of the half, 35 fouls had been called.”
Hoisington, which finished a combined 21-for-40 from the free-throw line, was led by Stetler, who had 17 points.
Larned was supported by guard Cameron Brown, who had 11 points. Jahman Hill, the Indians 6-0 point guard, scored 10 points.
“They got it going,” Brown said. “Jahman and Cameron are best when they get into the lane, and for some reason, I think they are just a little bit more in control when they get in there more than anything else. They were able to finish a few plays in the second half that they weren’t able to in the first half.”
The Indians were 15-for-24 from the free-throw line.
Hoisington senior shooting guard Derrick Kaiser and junior Anthony Broeder finished with 11 points each in spite of running into foul trouble themselves.
“He has been the first two games,” Haxton said of Broeder. “He’s been our third-leading scorer the first two games. We expected out of him. A lot of people I talk to are surprised, but that’s what the coaches expected.
“Kaiser started getting into a rhythm when we wanted to slow things down. We want to run some clock and protect our lead. I thought we did a much better job controlling the basketball in the second half. We take pride in playing better basketball than we did in that first half.”
