Hoisington Cardinals beat league-leader

HOISINGTON -- Hoisington pitcher Kyle Lang secured a baseball split by striking out the final two batters to preserve a 4-3 victory over league leader Nickerson. The Panthers won the opener 9-4. Hoisington improves to 5-7, 5-7 CKL and Nickerson drops to 7-1, 7-1 CKL.
NICKERSON 9, HOISINGTON 4 -- Tanner Schrag led the Panthers with two doubles and a triple.
Hoisington led 2-0 after ace Nickerson pitcher Braden Stewart, who walked Kody Lang and Braeden Crites in the first inning. Schlochtermeier singled and scored when Breit's two-RBI single also scored Crites.
Nickerson broke loose with a five-run fourth inning off pitcher Jeremy Breit. Austin Engelland and Chandler Eaton walked and Cameron Crandall reached on an error to load the bases. Wyatt Henson's walk forced in a run. Tanner Schrag's double drove in a run and Josh Salazar's two-run single drove home two runs.
Chandler Eaton singled and Henson walked to start the sixth inning off reliever Collin Schlochtermeier. Tanner Schrag's two-run triple made if 7-2 and Josh Salazar's double drove home Schrag for an 8-2 score.
Kaleb Blazek's single drove home Isaac Crites and Isaac Prosser's sacrifice fly brought home Jacob Warnken for two sixth-inning runs for an 8-4 score.
Austin Engelland's double drove home Kaleb McLean after a seventh-inning double.
HOISINGTON 4, NICKERSON 3 -- Kaleb Blazek's game-winning single off reliever Tanner Schrag scored Braeden Crites in the sixth inning for a 4-3 decision. Kyle Lang worked out of seventh-inning trouble when Tanner Schrag singled and Josh Salazar walked. But Lang struck out Braden Stewart and Kolbi Schrag, Nickerson's third and fourth-hole batters.
Nickersons Kaleb McLean scored on a wild pitch after he was hit by a pitch in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
Josh Beran's single drove home Warnken for a 1-1 tie in the second inning. The Cardinals made it 3-1 in the third inning. Braxton Donovan singled and Schlochtermeier walked off Austin Engelland. Crites delivered an RBI double and Warnken's sacrifice fly drove home Crites.
Nickerson tied it 3-3 on runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Engelland's sacrifice fly scored McLean in the fourth inning. Cameron Crandall's single drove home Engelland in the sixth inning for a 3-3 tie.
