LYONS — After Hoisington’s softball team rolled to a 19-1 first-game victory, Lyons salvaged a split with a hard-earned 4-2 Central Kansas League victory Tuesday.
HOISINGTON 19, LYONS 1 (game 1) — Hoisington’s softball opener was near perfect as Trinity Dolezal drove in five runs with four hits and two doubles. The Cardinals drilled a dozen extra-base hits off pitcher Logan Griffitt while rolling to a 14-1 lead after four innings.
Winning pitcher Taylor Boxberger threw a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks. Boxberger drove in four runs with a single and double.
Jenna Urban tripled twice and drove in three runs. Keeley Wolf doubled twice and drove home two runs. Riley Brungardt drove in two runs with a single and double.
Aurora Ingram, Brooke Steinert and Bailee Bachar drove in runs. Alexis Villanueva drove in the Lions’ run.
The Cardinals scored six runs in the second and fourth innings.
LYONS 4, HOISINGTON 2 (game 2) — Lyons pitcher Logan Griffitt adjusted and stunned the Cardinals by yielding no earned runs with one walk. The Cardinals managed a two-run fifth inning off Griffitt.
Hoisington pitcher Boxberger was effective, but she yielded nine hits, three walks and hit three batters, which cost her two runs.
Daci Stover doubled and scored on an error with two out in the second inning. Ashley Fierro and Villaneuva singled and Bailey Hollinger was hit by a pitch in a two-run third inning. Stover walked to force home Fierro and Griffitt’s hit by pitch scored Villanueva.
Hoisington’s Urban reached base on a dropped third strike and Boxberger walked in the fifth inning. Urban scored and pinch runner Brooke Reif scored on Fierro’s error.
The Lions added a valuable insurance run when Hollinger doubled and scored on an error for a 4-2 lead. Four Cardinals reached base in the sixth inning, but Ingram was forced out. Brooke Steinert was forced out at second base by right fielder Gabriella Guzman.
