HOISINGTON — The Chase High School girls’ basketball team traded baskets with Otis-Bison for a little while in the Class 1A Division-II sub-state semifinal game.
However, the Lady Cougars began sinking long-ranged shots for two and three points, and the Lady Kats fell behind.
Otis-Bison won 55-40 on Friday night.
“I think the big thing was we had some girls hit some outside shots,” Schmidt said. “We usually don’t hit them as well as we did. That was just one of those things. We knew they were going to pack it in on Janel (Tammen).
“Everybody has all year, and we’ve been working all year on moving the ball around and getting that outside shot. Maybe we’re finally getting some confidence and maybe we can hit some of those.”
A 15-0 run that closed the first quarter and ran two minutes into the second helped Otis-Bison jump to a 36-15 lead at halftime.
Hannah Bannister began the run with a 3-pointer from the right wing.
MacKenzie Boone reeled in an offensive rebound and dropped in a layup followed by Dekota Nelson putting in a shot with 2.1 seconds remaining.
Nelson opened the second quarter with a 3-ball, and Tammen completed a three-point play before Boone capped the run with another rebound and putback.
“I thought everybody played pretty well as far as offense because we passed the ball pretty well and everybody got shots,” Schmidt said. “I just thought it was a good team effort.”
Both teams came out slow in the third quarter, and Chase outscored the Lady Cougars 20-13 in the final eight minutes, but the Lady Kats couldn’t dig themselves out.
“I thought the first half, we played fairly well,” Otis-Bison head coach Rick Schmidt said. “I thought the second half, we played real sloppy. We didn’t take care of the ball. We forced some passes that weren’t there.
“Some of it was their defense. They were pressuring us, but I felt we needed to be under control a little more. I think we needed a little more composure.”
Tammen finished with a game-high 18 points.
Nelson and Bannister joined her in double figures with 10 points apiece.
Ashlyn Ray led Chase with 14 points.
