ST. JOHN — A last-second shot by Macksville High School senior Mindy Wood fell short as La Crosse held on for a 47-45 win in a Class 1A Division-I sub-state game on Wednesday night.
Leading 17-16 at halftime, Macksville struggled to handle La Crosse’s defensive press in the third quarter.
The Lady Leopards took command of the game, leaving the Lady Mustangs fighting to come back down the stretch.
Selena Galan led the Lady Mustangs (4-17) with 14 points.
Wood added 13 for Macksville.

STERLING — Getting multiple turnovers from their half-court defense, the Central Plains Oilers took a lopsided 16-3 lead after eight minutes.
They held on for a first-round victory at a 2A sub-state tournament.
Point guard Layne Bieberle led Central Plains (14-8) with 20 points.
Michael Ryan scored 10 points for the Oilers, who play again on Friday night.

Inman 44, Ellinwood 28
STERLING — The Ellinwood Eagles close their season with a first-round loss in a 2A sub-state tournament.
Ellinwood fell behind 15-2 after eight minutes, and couldn’t make up the difference.
The Eagles finish 5-16 on the season.
