Establishing their best Great Bend High School Invitational record and finish in five seasons, the Lady Panthers placed third out of seven teams on Saturday at Panther Fieldhouse.
The Lady Panthers posted a 4-2 record at the invite, beating the likes of Phillipsburg, defending Class 1A state champion St. John, Hays and Pratt Skyline. They lost to Salina Central, which finished first, and Wichita Northwest, which took home second.
“We played good from the beginning,” Great Bend head coach Kelsey Perry said. “We played Salina Central close in our first match and just fell behind in the second.
“We played well against Central, a very good team, and beat them in the first set in a three-game match. The same thing with Wichita Northwest. They’re 24-1 and we played them very close, so we used that momentum and really talked to our girls about effort.”
Perry said her team is getting into a rhythm.
“We’re hitting the ball so well right now between Bonnie (Boultinghouse) and Kelsie (Doll), Hannah Hildebrand and Brenna Haines. Kaylie Doll and Tarynn Stueder on the back row, and Tarynn is so steady for us.
“Overall, I thought it was a good tournament for us. We took Salina Central down to the wire, and we liked that. We also played Wichita Northwest well.”
