LARNED — Larned pitcher Mattie Glover threw the opener and delivered the go-ahead double to spark the Indians to an 11-9 first-game softball victory over Kingman. The Eagles won the nightcap 16-5 to split the doubleheader played in 45-degree weather.
LARNED 11, KINGMAN 9 (game 1) — The Indians rallied from an 8-3 deficit with a six-run sixth inning off Kingman pitcher Carlie Kelley.
Abby Towery, Breanna Setzer, Baylea Perez, Alea Makings, Lynzi Myrick and Glover scored sixth-inning runs. Makings and Glover delivered RBI doubles in the inning.
“We did the job offensively that first game,” said Larned softball coach Amy Wilson. “I was most pleased our young girls and our bottom of the batting order stepped up and got the job done.”
Perez, Makings and Myrick scored first-inning runs for a 3-0 lead. Myrick and Shaylee Martin delivered RBI base hits. By the time Larned scored again, Kingman led 8-3 after 41/2 innings.
Makings and Myrick scored runs in the fifth inning and Myrick doubled home Makings.
Martin delivered three hits and Myrick and Nikki Taylor each had two hits.
KINGMAN 16, LARNED 5 (game 2) — The Eagles scored 13 runs in the first three innings by taking advantage of walks and Larned errors.
Larned’s Myrick scored a second-inning run. The Indians scored four times in the fourth inning. Myrick, Glover, Kendra Grandy and Julie Tapia scored runs. Glover and Grandy each had two hits.
“Kingman is a good softball team and we struggled defensively in the second game,” Wilson said. “We walked too many batters and committed too many errors.”
The Indians play Tuesday at Hillsboro (2-0).
