Larned's Skelton powers Indians to split

LARNED — Larned’s Haley Skelton drilled a three-run homer and drove home five runs to spark the Indians to a 5-2 Central Kansas League softball victory over Lyons. The Lions won the nightcap 9-7 to salvage a split.
Larned (9-11) will meet rival Hoisington (8-12) in Monday’s 4A Larned softball regional. Pratt (17-1) meets Nickerson (0-19) in the second game.
LARNED 5, LYONS 2 — Pitcher Mattie Glover yielded two unearned runs, but benefited from strong defensive plays. Centerfielder Ivory Muldrow threw to shortstop Baylea Perez for a first-inning double-play. Daci Stover was thrown out at home on a third-inning tag by catcher Lynzi Myrick.
Skelton homered off pitcher Ruth Pineda after Maddy Wares reached on a passed ball on a strikeout and Perez singled in the third inning. Skelton singled home Muldrow and Perez after a hit by pitch and single in the fifth inning.
Pineda scored in the first inning when a bunt by Stover was misplayed. Pineda scored a third-inning run on a Larned error.
LYONS 9, LARNED 7 — Larned trailed 6-0 before rallying. Lynzi Myrick third-inning homer highlighted a 10-hit attack. Monica Clark and Ivory Muldrow each drove home two runs.
Pinch runner Renee Tracy and Monica Clark scored on errors and Muldrow’s groundout scored three second-inning runs. Clark’s single scored Madison Erway in the fourth inning and Clark scored the tying run on Muldrow’s groundout.
Jessiah Smith homered for a 7-6 lead and Bailey Hollinger’s seventh-inning two-run homer gave the Lions a 9-6 lead. Hollinger drove home four runs. Smith and Stover each drove home two runs.
Kelsey Parr’s RBI seventh-inning single scored Muldow, but pitcher Logan Griffitt retired Skelton and Myrick to end the game.
