HAYS — Clutch free-throw shooting bailed out Great Bend High School after host Hays made a late run at the Lady Panthers Saturday morning during the seventh-place game of the Hays City Shoot-Out.
Great Bend (1-2) converted 12 of 15 foul shots for all but two of its fourth-quarter points as it registered a 50-43 victory over the Lady Indians. Kalie LeShore made all six of her free throws and senior teammate Jennifer Allende sank 6 of 8 to keep Hays at bay.
The non-conference victory over their Western Athletic Conference foe was a shot in the arm for the Lady Panthers after losing the first two games of the season-opening tourney.
“We played a really good basketball team,” Great Bend head coach Jason Tatkenhorst said of Hays (0-3). “They’re going to get better as the season progresses.
“It was good to get a win, especially after we lost the last two games. We really needed a win, and this game is going to give us some confidence.”
GBHS, which led 25-20 at halftime, extended its lead to 36-25 at the end of three periods. It appeared the Lady Panthers were on the threshold of blowing Hays out of the Felten Middle School gymnasium.
Lexie Brack’s coast-to-coast drive for a layup with nearly six minutes left made it 38-29, but Hays started making its furious run at that juncture.
Hays’ Lindsey Schmidler converted 3 of 4 free throws and then Paige Lundsford’s 3-pointer with 4:10 remaining, trimming the margin to 38-35. A three-point play by Janae Gagnon at the 3:09 mark knotted the score at 38.
“The turning point came when we made two free throws in a row,” Tatkenhorst said of Allende’s pair of free throws at the 2:57 mark, which started their free-throw run. “Those two girls did a great job knocking down some free throws.”
LeShore made all six of hers during a one minute, 23-second stretch, the final two coming with 1:15 remaining to make it a 46-42 ballgame.
It came after Hanna Pfannenstiel’s cut to the basket and layup carved the margin made it a two-point game at 44-42.
When Hays missed a baseline shot with 52.5 seconds left and trailing by four, Allende then sank 4 of 6 from the line in the final 43.8 seconds to put it away.
Cassidy Tutak, who scored six second-quarter points in helping give GBHS its 25-20 halftime lead, shared team-high scoring honors with Brack as each scored nine points.
Great Bend, which is idle until playing host to Pratt on Friday, made 20 of 27 foul shots in the game.
Friday’s game
TMP-Marian 55, Great Bend 44
A popping sound could be heard during second-half action Friday night.
It was Great Bend High School shooting holes in Thomas More Prep-Marian’s defense, a game where the Lady Panthers had six 3-point hits — all after halftime.
Trouble was, Great Bend had fallen behind 23-13 at halftime and faced an uphill climb the rest of the way.
Despite the Lady Panthers barrage from beyond the arc, their long shots were not enough as TMP-Marian held on for the win.
“Our girls did a great job of regrouping at halftime,” Lady Panthers head coach Jason Tatkenhorst said. “It was good to see.
“We battled back, and then we couldn’t get a defensive rebound (down the stretch).”
TMP (1-1) outscored Great Bend 19-14 in the fourth quarter, converting 14 of 20 free throws during that stretch to finish 30-for-44 from the line on the afternoon.
“If they kept Hays City Shoot-Out records for fouls in a tournament, there’s no question we would have probably set it,” Tatkenhorst said.
The Lady Panthers’ Olivia Bayse knocked down a trio of 3s. Kelsey Crosby, Kaitlee Spray and Lexie Brack had the other trifectas.
