ST. JOHN — Tanner Tranbarger, Henry Penner and Isaac Seibert led the Macksville High School boys’ track and field team to a Class 1A regional championship on Friday.
The Mustangs finished with 68 points, topping second-place Pretty Prairie, which finished with 62.
“It’s exciting,” Macksville head coach Jennifer Gillespie said. “The great thing is we have all of our point production back next year, and we have a great eighth-grade class coming up. There were some kids who had some lingering injuries from basketball season that would’ve helped us.
“This is back-to-back titles for us. We won a regional title last year, so we’re definitely in a good position. There were a lot of good teams out there.”
Tranbarger won the 110-meter and 300 hurdles in times of 15.43 and 41.22, respectively. He also finished second in the high jump, clearing six feet to qualify for the state meet in all three events as a top-4 finisher.
“I’ve got to tip my hat to Tanner,” Gillespie said. “He really got us going with his second-place finish in the high jump. We told him that if he cleared 6-0 that he’d qualify, and that’s just what he did.”
The Class 6-1A state track and field championships is set for Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus.
Mustangs distance runner Penner won both the 1,600 (4:42.48) and the 3,200 (10:18.58).
Seibert, who qualified for the state meet in the 110 hurdles with a second-place finish, won the pole vault with a height of 12-0.
“Henry was solid for us in the distance,” Gillespie said. “He’s going to have his hands full at state.
“Seibert has been very solid for us in the pole vault. We’re trying to get him out on a longer pole. It’s difficult because it pulls him out of his comfort zone, but that’s one of our goals next week.”
The Lady Mustangs had two state qualifiers in Kenzie Pavlu in the discus and Lisa Penner in the 800 run and 1,600 run.
“(Pavlu) is a returner (to the state meet),” Gillespie said. “She missed the podium by one inch last year. She was five inches out of qualifying in the shot put.”

Stafford claims
two regional titles
Austin Ceniti had a solid outing at St. John-Hudson’s regional meet.
He won the 800 run (2:04.63), was part of a 4x800 relay team that claimed first place (8:22.84) and qualified for the state meet in the 400 dash.
Ceniti was joined by Mikey Aguilar, Derek McClure and Dustin McClure in the relay.
Derek McClure finished second in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 to qualify for the state meet.
The Trojans finished fifth overall with 46 points.

St. John-Hudson qualifies four relay teams for state meet
Regional-host St. John-Hudson had four relay teams — two boys and two girls — and one individual qualify for the state meet on Friday.
“We had some good results,” St. John head coach Trish Wade said. “We had a lot of good competition at our meet. We had some of the top runners in the state competing against us, so I was pleased with how our team did.
“We got a lot of relays in, so that was definitely a good thing.”
A second-place finish for Alexis Witt, Ashlyn Fisher, Teresa Christie and Tia Smith in the 4x100 relay and a fourth-place finish for Smith, Tara Christie, Fisher and Taylor Woodward in the 4x800 relay punched their tickets for the state meet.
Kade Kinnamon, Omar Ramirez, Ethan Allen and Zuriel Reyes finished fourth in the 4x100 and Clay Cooper, Kinnamon, Dean Wade and Reyes took fourth in the 4x400.
Allen captured fourth place in the javelin to move on.

Pawnee Heights
to send two athletes
to state meet
Jacob Hardiman will represent the Pawnee Heights boys at the state meet, and Megan Milch will represent the Lady Tigers.
Hardiman qualified for the 400 dash with a second-place finish.
Milch took second in the high jump.
